With this type of strategy, it is easy to see why people get so addicted to penny auctions because they are so much fun to bid on since you know you may win an iPhone or a PlayStation 3 for such a small amount of money. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that you can enter a bid at a time when it is running out and then go neck and neck with other people who may have been bidding on this item for hours, and therefore, you may be able to win the item if you come in at a later time since these two bidders may have been going at it for an hour or so already.
